Krets

Privacy Policy

This policy explains what data Krets collects, why, and the choices you have. Last updated: August 2026.

What Krets is

Krets is a place discovery app that lets you save, recommend and share restaurants, cafés and bars with a trusted circle of people. To do this we store a small amount of data tied to your account, described below. We do not sell your personal data.

Data we collect

Account & profile When you create an account we store your email address (or the identifier from Apple or Google sign-in), your display name, username, optional bio and optional profile photo. If you sign in with Apple using "Hide My Email", we only ever see Apple's relay address.
Content you create The places you recommend or save, the notes and tags you write, any photo you attach to a recommendation, and your connections (who you follow) are stored so the app can show them to you and to the people in your circle.
Location With your permission, your device location is used to sort places by distance and to show what is near you. Your precise location is used on your device and is not sent to or stored on our servers — place search is biased by your selected city, not your device position. Like any maps app, when you centre the map on your position, the map loads tiles for that area from our map providers (Apple Maps and OpenFreeMap) to draw it; your coordinates themselves are never transmitted or retained.
Place data & photos Place information and place photos are fetched from Google Places. Krets does not store these Google photos itself; they are loaded from Google (through a proxy) when shown.
Smart search & translations A couple of features use AI services from OpenAI. When you use smart (natural-language) search, your search text is sent to OpenAI to help find relevant places. Short, factual place descriptions are machine-translated into your language using OpenAI (the app labels these as "machine-translated"). These features don't make decisions about you, and the recommendations in Krets are always written by people — never generated by AI.
Recommendation photos You can optionally add one photo to a recommendation. Unlike Google place photos, a recommendation photo is uploaded by you and stored by Krets in Supabase Storage. It is shown only to people who can see that recommendation — your approved followers if your profile is locked, or any logged-in Krets user if your profile is open — is used only to display the recommendation in the app, and is served through short-lived signed links. It is not shown on public or shared web links outside the app. If you remove the photo or the recommendation, we delete — or attempt to delete — the stored image; deleting your account removes your recommendation photos; and moderators may remove a photo that is reported for breaking our rules.
Push notifications If you enable notifications, we store a device push token so we can send you relevant alerts (for example, when someone in your circle recommends a place). You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings.
Diagnostics We use Sentry to collect crash reports, app-hang and performance diagnostics, and error information so we can fix bugs and keep the app responsive. These reports may include technical details about your device and the error, and are tied to your account by an opaque identifier, but are not used to identify or track you for advertising.
Product analytics & session replay To understand how Krets is used and to improve it, we use PostHog for privacy-safe usage analytics: which screens you open and product actions such as saving or recommending a place, recorded as anonymous categories and counts — never the text you write, the messages you send, or your location. We also capture privacy-safe session replays in which all text, input fields, images and photos are masked before anything leaves your device, so no readable content, notes or pictures are ever recorded. This data is tied to your account by an opaque identifier, is processed in the European Union, and is never used for advertising or to track you across other apps. Recording is on by default; you can turn it off at any time in Profile → Settings.

How we use your data

We use the data above to operate the core features of Krets: to run your account, show your saved and recommended places, deliver content from the people you follow, send notifications you have opted into, and keep the app working reliably. We also use privacy-safe analytics, session replay and diagnostics to understand how the app is used, fix problems and improve it. We do not use your data for third-party advertising, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

Sharing & visibility

Within Krets Your profile can be open or locked — you choose in Settings. With an open profile, your name, username, bio, recommendations, notes, public lists and your follower/following lists are visible to any logged-in Krets user. With a locked profile, that content is visible only to followers you have approved; others see just your name, username and bio, and must send you a follow request. Private lists and private notes-to-self are never visible to anyone but you, regardless of profile setting.
Blocking & reporting You can block another user from their profile. Once blocked, their recommendations and activity no longer appear to you across the app, and blocking works in both directions. You can also report users, places and recommendations from within the app; reports are stored and reviewed by our moderators, who may remove content that breaks our rules.
Service providers We rely on a small number of providers to run the app — Supabase (database, authentication and photo storage), Google Places (place data and place photos), Sentry (crash and performance diagnostics), PostHog (privacy-safe product analytics and session replay, processed in the EU), Expo (push notification delivery) and OpenAI (smart search and translation, described above). They process data only to provide these services to us.
International transfers OpenAI processes the text it receives on servers in the United States, and some of our other providers may also process data outside your country. Where data is handled outside your region, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as our providers' standard data-protection terms.

Your choices

Delete your account You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time from within the app: Profile → Settings (⚙) → Account → Delete account.
Edit your information You can update your name, username, bio and profile photo from your profile, and remove individual recommendations or notes at any time.
Permissions Location and notification access are optional and can be changed at any time in your device settings.
Analytics & session replay Usage analytics and privacy-safe session replay are on by default to help us improve Krets. You can turn them off at any time in Profile → Settings (⚙).

Data retention

We keep your data for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your profile, recommendations, notes, recommendation photos and connections are permanently removed. Some analytics, session-replay and diagnostic data may persist for a limited time before being automatically deleted.

Children

Krets is not directed at children under 13, and you must be at least 13 years old to create an account.
